Ellen Hopkins, Maggie Thrash, & Marie Marquardt: LA Times Festival of Books Young Adult Panel

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books was April 22-23rd, and San Diego Literary Scene was there.  Here are some pics from the Young Adult Panel on Saturday, which featured authors Ellen Hopkins, Marie Marquardt, & Maggie Thrash.  The panel was moderated by author Aaron Hartzler.

Ellen Hopkins published 20 nonfiction books for children before moving into young adult fiction.  She is the bestselling author of eleven young adult novels, as well as the adult novels Triangles, Collateral, and Love Lies Beneath. Hopkins founded Ventana Sierra, a nonprofit youth housing and resource initiative.  Her newest novel is, The You I've Never Known for young adults.

Marie Marquardt is a college professor, and an immigration advocate, and is the author of two YA novels:  The Radius of Us and Dream Things True. A Scholar-in-Residence at Emory
University's Candler School of Theology, Marie also has published articles and co-authored two non-fiction books about Latin American immigration to the U.S. South. She is chair of El Refugio, a non-profit that serves detained immigrants and their families, and a proud member of the We Need Diverse Books team.

Maggie Thrash is the author of the graphic novel memoir, Honor Girl, and the YA mystery, We Know It Was You. Honor Girl was a 2015 finalist for the LA Times Book Prize in Graphic Novel/Comics.  Her short stories and non-fiction articles can be found on Rookie, a popular online magazine for teenage girls.  Her most recent book is We Know It Was You.

Aaron Hartzler  grew up in a home of evangelical Christians.  His first book, Rapture Practice, is his coming-of-age memoir, recalling his teenage journey to find the person he is, without hurting the family that loves him. It’s a story about losing your faith, finding your place, and learning your truth. His 2nd novel, What We Saw, deals with rape culture, consent, and the complicity in silence.
