Comickaze Comics Hosted Cory Doctorow For Walkaway Reading

Comickaze Comics hosted best selling author, Cory Doctorow, Tuesday night at their Point Loma store, in Liberty Station.  Currently, Mr. Doctorow is in San Diego for the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop, because he is one of this year's writers in residence.  In addition, he will also be attending San Diego Comic Con on Sunday.

Mr. Doctorow is a blogger, activist and journalist.  He is the co-editor of Boing Boing (boingboing.net), and is a special consultant to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org), which is a non-profit civil liberties group that defends freedom in technology law, policy, standards and treaties.  He also co-founded the open source, peer-to-peer software company, OpenCola.  and he has written multiple best selling, award winning books.  He has written fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels, some for young adults, as well as adult books.

Fans were treated to a wonderful evening, which started out with Mr. Doctorow reading from his latest book, Walkaway.  This science fiction, dystopian novel takes place in the near future, in Canada. Ecological catastrophes, wealth/economic disparity, and more have played out to their disastrous conclusion, and the story proceeds from there.

A lively audience Q&A followed the reading.  The questions asked, and the topics covered, ranged from the philosophy of Karl Marx, to Ronald Coase, to Rebecca Solnit's book, A Paradise Built In Hell, and to the political & social role of science fiction, and the role of the artist, among others.  Mr. Doctorow is clearly widely, and diversely read, and it seems he draws on everything for inspiration in his writing and work.  It was truly an engaging and informative evening.  At the end of the discussion, Mr. Doctorow meet with fans, and signed books.  When the event was over, Mr. Doctorow sat with me for a 1-on-1 interview, so stay tuned for that post!
