The San Diego Museum Of Art Book Club Returns In August

The San Diego Museum of Art is home to the Art of Reading book club.  A book is selected, generally, but not always, based on it's relationship to one of the museum's current exhibits.  Enjoy coffee and conversation with fellow museum members, as you explore the art-based titles.

The August book selection is, Eye of the Sixties: Richard Bellamy and the Transformation of Modern Art, by Judith E. Stein.  The book explores the relationship between art and money, and themes of value and worth. How does art get from the artist's studio to a gallery or museum?  The book examines the early days of the market for contemporary art, which was in the early 1960s.  In particular, the book focuses on art dealer, Dick Bellamy, a beatnik with a legendary eye.  At the Green Gallery on 57th Street, Bellamy launched the careers of Pop, Op and conceptual artists, as well as artists such as Claes Oldenburg and James Rosenquist, Donald Judd and Dan Flavin, Mark di Suvero and Lucas Samaras, and Robert Morris and Larry Poons.

The book club is held quarterly.  Immediately following the talk, a Museum Docent will lead a tour that is focused on the book’s themes.  Eye of the Sixties is available in The Museum Store.  The next meeting is on August 12th, from 10:00 am - 11:30 am, in the San Diego Museum of Art boardroom.
