The 2016 MacArthur Foundation Fellow, Maggie Nelson, will be speaking at the University of San Diego on October 5th, for the Barrie Cropper Memorial Lecture on Creative Writing. This series was created to inspire the writer in all of us. The purpose of the center is to foster the appreciation and practice of creative writing at the University of San Diego by hosting an annual writers series, sponsoring writing workshops, and granting awards for creative writing.
Maggie Nelson is the author of nine books, many of which have become cult classics, defying genre or categorization. Her nonfiction titles include the National Book Critics Circle Award winner, and New York Times bestseller, The Argonauts. Her book, The Art of Cruelty: A Reckoning was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and Bluets was named by Bookforum as one of the top 10 best books of the past 20 years. Her poetry titles include Jane: A Murder, which was a finalist for the PEN/ Martha Albrand Art of the Memoir. She has also been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Nonfiction, an NEA in Poetry, an Innovative Literature Fellowship from Creative Capital, and an Arts Writers Fellowship from the Andy Warhol Foundation.
Nelson will be appearing at two events on October 5th. First, from 12:30pm-1:30pm, she will deliver the Barrie Cropper Memorial Lecture on the Craft of Creative Writing at the USD Hahn University Center, Forum C. Then, at 6:00 p.m., she will read from her own work at USD Mother Rosalie Hill Hall, Warren Auditorium. The evening will include dessert reception, and book signing. Both events are FREE and open to the public.
