Joyce Cutler-Shaw Joint Exhibition By UCSD Library & Athenaeum Music & Arts Library On View

The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library & the UC San Diego Geisel Library have teamed up for a joint exhibition of the works of acclaimed multimedia artist, Joyce Cutler-Shaw.   Joyce Cutler-Shaw is the first visual artist to be appointed Artist-in-Residence by the School of Medicine at UCSD, and the first nationally, to have such a medical school residency for an independent fine art project, entitled The Anatomy Lesson. Her subjects are human identity and the natural world. Her themes are evolution and survival.

Her works are held in both museum and library special collections, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, the 42nd Street Library, the Albertina Museum in Austria, the Teylers Museum in the Netherlands, the Wellcome Institute in London, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and in California, at the Getty Center Library, the UCSD, and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library.

The Joyce Cutler-Shaw: Library Duet is a comprehensive retrospective exhibition, which presents a selection of books spanning Cutler-Shaw’'s distinguished career. Themes of evolution and human identity are explored and presented in tiny books, pop-ups, scrolls, books that one walks into, and much more.  Some works will be displayed at the Athenaeum, and others will be displayed at the UC San Diego Geisel Library.

The Athenaeum is proud to have the complete collection of her artist’'s books, many of which are one of a kind.  The Athenaeum exhibit, which will run through November 4th, displays a retrospective of Cutler-Shaw’s artist’s books from that permanent collection.

The UC San Diego Library exhibit contains Cutler-Shaw’s archival materials, including its permanent display of the three-dimensional calligraphic work, Alphabet of Bones, and Cutler-Shaw’s current work, Brain Project.  The Brain Project consists of brain scans in various forms, tunnel books with movies, and recent handwriting and drawing samples created after Cutler-Shaw'’s recent diagnosis of cortico-basal syndrome and degeneration.  The Geisel Library'’s exhibition runs through October –27th.
