Independent Bookstore Day is April 28th, and many stores in San Diego will be celebrating with events all weekend long. Independent Bookstore Day is a great way to celebrate, and support, our wonderful local bookstores here in San Diego. Independent Bookstore Day was started in California, and 2018 marks the 4th year for the event, which is now celebrated nation wide - this year 507 stores, in 48 states, will be participating.
Stores have lots of special programming planned, including author readings, scavenger hunts, trivia contests, exclusive merchandise, raffles, and more. Some of the merch available only on this day are items created just for the event by publishers and authors. This year they include a signed, limited edition story by Michael Chabon, taken from his novel, Moonglow. There is also a cocktail guide featuring the favorite drinks of 30 authors, a Jenny Lawson signed black & white print, and a Henry Louis Gates, Jr. quote, "Censorship is to art as lynching is to justice", stencil.
One way to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day is by participating in the San Diego Book Crawl. Nine local independent bookstores are on the Book Crawl route: Bay Books, La Playa Books, Verbatim Books, Bluestocking Books, UCSD Bookstore, The Library Shop, Warwick's Books, The Book Catapult, and Mysterious Galaxy Books.
Stop in at any one of the bookstores and pick up your Book Crawl Passport. Get the passport stamped with each purchase made at a participating store in order to be eligible for prizes. Get 4 stamps and you will receive the limited edition San Diego Book Crawl tote bag. Get 4 - 8 stamps and you will get tickets for the Silver raffle, which features gift packages from individual bookstores that reflect each store's curated collections. Get all 9 stamps and you get a ticket for the Gold raffle, which features gift certificates totaling over $200.00!
So go out and make a day of it!
